Washburn University, Dr. James Hurd Recital Hall
Washburn University recently celebrated the opening of the new Dr. James Hurd Recital Hall in Topeka, Kansas. The 180-seat hall honors Dr. James Hurd, a 1967 alumnus who spent more than 50 years teaching music at the university. Designed for chamber music, small ensembles, and solo performances, the hall features a flexible flat-floor layout that accommodates a variety of seating and stage configurations.
Meteor Lighting's Duo 6 suspended cylinder luminaires were selected for the primary house lighting. As a dual-emission cylinder combining direct and indirect illumination, the fixtures brighten the performance floor while revealing the sculptural form of the floating acoustic ceiling clouds, creating a visually balanced and architecturally expressive environment. Flicker-free, camera-friendly performance also supports recording and livestreaming applications.
